Project Overview:

Located off Highway 17 in Awendaw, SC, this rural single‑family community will introduce 28 new homes to the Town of Awendaw. The site is surrounded by protected wetlands, creating unique challenges from initial clearing through final grading. Shallow groundwater across the project required constant monitoring and management during construction activities.

Because of the low existing elevations, the plans called for nearly 45,000 cubic yards of imported fill to bring the site up to grade, supplemented by material generated from five on‑site ponds. This earthwork was critical to creating stable building pads, roads, and drainage infrastructure.

During land clearing, the project plans underwent a major revision that affected grading and earthwork, pond design, the storm drainage system, and water layout. JWC’s Awendaw land clearing and grading team quickly adapted, adjusting operations to align with the updated plans while keeping production moving with minimal disruption.

Challenges & Details:

  • Working adjacent to protected wetlands and managing shallow groundwater throughout the site
  • Implementing a major plan set modification shortly after clearing began, while maintaining production and schedule
