Project Overview:

JWC is proud to have been awarded the opportunity to assist our long-time vendor, Ferguson Waterworks, in expanding their laydown yard. The primary objective of this project was to enhance Ferguson’s operational capabilities by providing nearly two additional acres of material storage, all while ensuring that daily business activities continued without interruption during the construction process.

This property was the location for Dominion Energy, Dominion Gas and Santee Cooper utility easements that stored several overhead power lines and large gas mains below ground. Given these existing infrastructures, it was essential to proceed with extreme caution during excavation activities involving muck and fill operations as well as when operating machinery with swinging booms overhead.

Upon completion of the expansion, the newly created laydown area was top dressed in a pervious plantation mix. This solution was designed to maximize drainage capabilities while ensuring that Dominion Gas retains future access to their main in the event of any operational issues. The site was further stabilized with seed and secured with new perimeter fencing and access gates to enhance safety and operational efficiency.

Challenges & Details:

A significant challenge faced during this project was the presence of a drainage ditch, managed by the City of North Charleston, which separated the current yard from the new expansion area. To address this, JWC, in collaboration with Pomona Pipe Products, designed and constructed a highway-rated aluminum bridge culvert over the drainage easement. This structure was a pivotal element of the project, ensuring that the newly constructed route would safely accommodate fully loaded traffic.

Additionally, there was the critical requirement of safely managing an exposed Dominion gas main. We meticulously worked around this gas main, which was subsequently enclosed in the backfill over the culvert, necessitating precision and caution throughout the construction process.
