Project Overview:

Refuel Market #1061 is strategically located at the intersection of Orangeburg Road and W. 5th North Street (Hwy 78) in Summerville, SC. The site benefits from a high-visibility corner location and improved access with new SCDOT lane widenings and entry/exit connections designed to support heavy daily traffic.

A key feature of the project is a 12’–15′ deep detention pond with concrete foundations and cast-in-place walls, engineered for long-term performance and stormwater control. The work also included grading two new entrances along existing SCDOT highways, along with new water service, sewer connection into an existing manhole, sewer manholes, and sewer services along the right-of-way.

Fast, efficient delivery was central to Refuel’s goal of bringing the station online quickly. Walker Engineering & Construction coordinated multiple subcontractors, with James White Construction, LLC selected as the local Summerville underground utility and sitework partner based on experience with previous Refuel projects in the area.

Refuel Market #1061 represents the fourth consecutive local Refuel site constructed by the same core team. By March 2025, six Refuel Markets had been completed, including the Camp Hall Refuel Market in Ridgeville and the Summerville Anglers Refuel Market at Sangaree. That continuity has helped keep schedules aligned, communication clear, and sitework progressing smoothly from project to project.

Challenges & Details:

  • Property located at the intersection of two SCDOT highways
  • 12’–15′ deep detention pond with concrete walls
  • Fourth consecutive Refuel project with the same general contractor and sitework team; additional Refuel projects underway at Camp Hall in Ridgeville and at Summerville Anglers in Sangaree
  • New SCDOT turn lane required to provide safe access to the station
